Step-by-step method (زکوٰۃ کا طریقہ)
- List zakatable assets: cash in hand and bank, gold, silver, business stock, shares, money owed to you, and other trade assets.
- Deduct debts: subtract debts due now and immediate expenses from that total.
- Check Nisab: compare the net amount with Nisab. The tool uses Rs 252,000 as its Nisab figure.
- Apply 2.5%: if at or above Nisab, and held for one lunar year, Zakat = net zakatable wealth × 2.5% (divide by 40).
- Pay to eligible recipients (Qur'an 9:60) and keep a simple record.
Key facts you must not change
2.5% = 1/40
87.48 grams = 7.5 tola
612.36 grams = 52.5 tola
Rs 252,000
Zakat is due only when your zakatable wealth, held for one lunar year, is at or above Nisab (نصاب). Below Nisab, Zakat is not due on that wealth alone.
Worked example
Cash: Rs 600,000. Debts: Rs 0. Net zakatable wealth: Rs 600,000.
Rs 600,000 × 2.5% = Rs 15,000 Zakat. Rs 600,000 is above the Rs 252,000 Nisab, so Zakat is due.
Another check: Rs 600,000 ÷ 40 = Rs 15,000. The same answer, because 2.5% = 1/40.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to deduct debts before applying 2.5%.
- Applying 2.5% to personal items you use daily, such as your home or clothes — these are not zakatable trade wealth.
- Using an old gold price. Gold prices change daily, so check the sarafa rate on your due date.
