Quick answer: Add all your zakatable wealth, deduct what you owe, check if the result is at or above Nisab, and then pay 2.5% (1/40) of that amount.

Step-by-step method (زکوٰۃ کا طریقہ)

  1. List zakatable assets: cash in hand and bank, gold, silver, business stock, shares, money owed to you, and other trade assets.
  2. Deduct debts: subtract debts due now and immediate expenses from that total.
  3. Check Nisab: compare the net amount with Nisab. The tool uses Rs 252,000 as its Nisab figure.
  4. Apply 2.5%: if at or above Nisab, and held for one lunar year, Zakat = net zakatable wealth × 2.5% (divide by 40).
  5. Pay to eligible recipients (Qur'an 9:60) and keep a simple record.

Key facts you must not change

Zakat rate
2.5% = 1/40
Gold Nisab
87.48 grams = 7.5 tola
Silver Nisab
612.36 grams = 52.5 tola
Tool Nisab
Rs 252,000

Zakat is due only when your zakatable wealth, held for one lunar year, is at or above Nisab (نصاب). Below Nisab, Zakat is not due on that wealth alone.

Worked example

Cash: Rs 600,000. Debts: Rs 0. Net zakatable wealth: Rs 600,000.

Rs 600,000 × 2.5% = Rs 15,000 Zakat. Rs 600,000 is above the Rs 252,000 Nisab, so Zakat is due.

Another check: Rs 600,000 ÷ 40 = Rs 15,000. The same answer, because 2.5% = 1/40.
