Why both parts of the answer matter
Many people ask only for the maths: Rs 100,000 × 2.5% = Rs 2,500. That maths is correct, but Zakat has a threshold. If your total zakatable wealth is only Rs 100,000, it is below Nisab, so no Zakat is due on that amount alone.
If your total zakatable wealth is, for example, Rs 400,000, then 1 lakh is only part of it, and Zakat is calculated on the full Rs 400,000 — not on 1 lakh in isolation.
Key facts you must not change
2.5% = 1/40
87.48 grams = 7.5 tola
612.36 grams = 52.5 tola
Rs 252,000
Zakat is due only when your zakatable wealth, held for one lunar year, is at or above Nisab (نصاب). Below Nisab, Zakat is not due on that wealth alone.
Worked examples
Only Rs 100,000 total: Rs 100,000 × 2.5% = Rs 2,500 in maths, but below Rs 252,000 Nisab, so Zakat not due on this amount alone.
Rs 600,000 total: Rs 600,000 × 2.5% = Rs 15,000 Zakat, because it is above Nisab.
Rs 100,000 cash + Rs 200,000 gold = Rs 300,000 total: Rs 300,000 × 2.5% = Rs 7,500 Zakat, because the total is above Nisab.
